ACIER ET VERRE(Steel and Glass)

Created during my 3D Fabrication & Rapid Prototyping course, this piece was designed to synthesize the aesthetics of different art movements, namely Art Deco, Art Nouveau, through a planar design plasma-cut from steel.

The project began as an exploration of light and structure. In a conversation about the concept and my plans to design a light fixture from the piece with my good friend and talented glass artist, Hannah Bowlus, she proposed blowing glass through the cylindrical form and joined as a collaborator.

This collaboration inspired me to modify the design to incorporate Gothic motifs, adding an additional aesthetic inspired by the stained glass used in Gothic architecture.

This piece was deeply personal for me, as my dad, a millwright by trade, taught me how to weld for this project, allowing me to join the edges of the rolled steel. Furthermore, it provided me with an opportunity to collaborate with a friend and learn from her about glassblowing, a medium I have long admired. Lastly, it gave me the chance to draw inspiration from some of the inspiring architecture I’ve been fortunate enough to visit on my travels.
