INFINITE INDIFFERENT INESCAPABLE
Created during my bookmaking course, this book explores common interpretations of the cosmos through a collection of quotes chosen from scientists, artists, and authors. Themes of wonder, awe, personal insignificance, solitude, and more emerge from its unfolding pages.
When closed, the book is held by a band of paper I cyanotyped, directly tying its aesthetics with the light of the sun. When unfolded, the panels multiply awkwardly in all directions, scattering the quotes in every direction, encouraging the reader's contemplation of the directionless expanse of the universe. On the reverse sides and in the margins, are graphics depicting a constellation map looking up from the North Pole, imposed over the cyanotype pattern used in the banding to contain the book.
When the reader is finished, the book is folded back up, though doing so presents a puzzle, as there is only one correct sequence. This clumsy trial and error of folding up the book may evoke mild frustration, reminiscent of our struggle to find order or our discomfort with accepting the ambiguous nature of the universe.
