OBSCURITY DEFINING REALITY
Created during my bookmaking course, this box and book serve as a personal expression of discontent as I prepared for the next stage of my life. At that time, I aspired to study astronautical engineering at the United States Air Force Academy, but I also had dreams of other life paths. My color vision deficiency, informally known as color blindness, posed a potential risk of medical disqualification from the Air Force. It felt absurd that my future could be determined by something as obscure as the genetic mutation leading to color vision deficiency.
Opening the box, the viewer is guided through my introspection at the absurdity of something as intrinsic and immutable as DNA shaping my future. The design incorporates Ishihara color vision test graphics for the irises, a helical book structure evoking the form of DNA, and contrasting sides of the spiral representing diverging futures. Furthermore, the vector graphics surrounding the text create a subtle legibility challenge for the viewer, much like my experience in identifying forms in an Ishihara test.
Ironically, the sides of the helical spiral book presented two proposed realities: a cut-and-dry, rigid future in the Air Force and an open, undefined future as a civilian. In hindsight, my color vision did not limit me; instead, I experienced both sides of the helix to a degree and chose to pivot from one side to the other.
